Madam, – The puzzlement and hilarity enjoyed by Alice Chambers (May 22nd), and her English colleagues at the translation unit in the Bank of Italy, at the content of Dubarry of Ireland’s advert in Wanted in Rome, can be somewhat explained by the publication’s PC decision to delete the words Young, Smart, Male and Gent from the advert, and to add the words “mother tongue person”.
As a gesture of thanks to Ms Chambers, for bringing this to our attention, we would like to invite her and her colleagues at the Bank in Rome along for a glass of champagne, at the Dubarry stand next weekend at the Piazza Di Sienna Horse Show in Rome, to celebrate Dubarry’s entry into the Italian market – the home of footwear.
We also offer a pair of Dubarry boots to the first person to reconstruct the advert as originally submitted to Wanted in Rome to efagan@dubarry.com. – Yours, etc,
