Sir, – The report on the quality of drinking water for 2010, recently published by the Environmental Protection Agency (Breaking news, November 30th) is very good news. The reduction in instances where the microbiological contamination of water was detected is very welcome; in particular that substantial progress has been made in the remediation of water treatment plants nationally is one of the great news stories of 2011. It is good to see that the reduction of the level of trihalomethanes remains a priority.
In the current economic climate, where we are all under financial pressure, the value of clean drinking water is beyond measure. – Yours, etc,
