Madam, - Des Griffin writes (January 12th) that Martin Cullen has managed to focus State attention on the development of Waterford city.
It is true that on the Minister's watch, Waterford has seen much new building (though not, unfortunately, with respect to the cancer unit at the hospital). But neither the Minister nor the State have managed to focus their attention on the possible development of a major cultural and tourist attraction at Woodstown.
As a fortified ninth-century Viking town, Woodstown is unique in Europe and its investigation and promotion could only enhance the profile of Waterford nationally and internationally.
As a local man in ministries for Environment and Transport, Martin Cullen has been unable to make any coherent statement on his vision for the future of this site. Proud Waterfordians everywhere are taking note. - Yours, etc.,
CATHERINE SWIFT, Hacketstown, Co Carlow.
