Madam, - Although I am by upbringing and by inclination a Fine Gael supporter, I cannot sit idly by and watch the political career of one of the most able and decisive politicians we have had in Waterford ruined.
Working and making a living in Waterford under various parties and coalitions has often been a frustrating business. Despite the best of intentions on the part of our various representatives in Dáil Éireann, without a senior or even a junior minister to represent Waterford's interests government support would never be more than marginal. Over 35 years I watched people grow weary and cynical through the lack of government commitment and support; but all that has changed dramatically, mainly as a consequence of our Minister's efforts.
Progress has been made on the proposed new bridge and bypass; funding for Waterford Institute of Technology has risen substantially, leading to much better levels of trained expertise to attract new investment into the area. Dividends to charities and sports clubs have also increased dramatically. The improved status has prompted a corresponding change in attitudes. There is a new and palpable sense of optimism in Waterford.
It is worthwhile for us to remember two things. Firstly, while it is obviously distressing to hear allegations of misconduct by representatives, we should not accept these as true until so proven. We should respect people's personal lives and allow the inquiries time to function without interference. Secondly, we should not forget that if the current media storm succeeds in driving Mr Cullen from office, the biggest loser will be Waterford. Whatever mistakes Martin Cullen may have made, these do not concern his representation of Waterford. Politically, economically, and environmentally, his proven track record is excellent.
Waterford needs Martin Cullen. Speculation based on premature information must not stampede us into rejecting a man who has proven so clearly his ability and willingness to defend the interests of this city and county. - Yours, etc.,
GERRY HALLEY,
Killotteran House,
Co Waterford.
