Madam, - Rumours have become stronger and more numerous lately that Queen Elizabeth will soon visit Northern Ireland. Would it not be a good idea that this visit be extended south at the formal invitation of the Republic? It could help to soothe and heal many of the wounds that Ireland and England have inflicted on each other.

Much could be done on our side under the auspices of President McAleese, who has tirelessly endeavoured to spread peace in our troubled country. Cobh would be an ideal venue for such a venture. Situated on the great island of Cork Harbour, with only limited access, it is easily defensible while still having all the amenities necessary for such a visit.

Leaders from all parts of the political divide in Ireland both North and South could also be asked to share the occasion, thus creating an informal forum where they could meet and discuss their differences face to face.

Cobh was formerly named Queenstown to honour a visit from Queen Victoria, but in the early 1920s the local urban council met to discuss changing the name. No decision was reached and no vote was taken on the matter; it was deferred to a later meeting, which never took place. "Cobh" was temporarily given as a substitute but no formal vote was ever passed on the matter.

If Queen Elizabeth does come here, the name "Cobh" could legally and formally be changed to "Queenshaven" to honour the occasion. - Yours, etc,
