Sir, - A carer is one who so willingly looks after the sick or old at home, be it husband, wife, child, mother, father, brother, sister etc. I look after my elderly mother which is a 24-hour job. But not only am I a carer, I am also a widow who is expected to survive on a pension of £71.10 a week. Where is the justice in this?
We carers save the Government millions of pounds by looking after our loved ones at home. We are happy to do that but we do need the Government to recognise our needs, and the needs of our carers.
We are told we are living in prosperous times, but as a full-time carer I do not benefit from the so-called Celtic Tiger. Carers are the forgotten people, despite their help in feeding the Celtic Tiger. I call on all carers to let the Government know that our needs must be given priority. Now! - Yours, etc., Mary McGoldrick,
Baldoyle, Dublin 13.
