Madam, - The disruption caused by Luas track-laying prompts a question. Why does Luas need railway lines? On the assumption that Luas drivers will not be authorised to "bulldoze" obstructing traffic out of the way, the use of railway lines makes little sense.
The bizarre circus at the Red Cow roundabout and space-sharing at other junctions will ensure that the Luas is unable to travel any faster than a bus.
Instead of lines, asphalt surfacing of dedicated stretches such as the Naas Road and coloured priority lanes on city streets would enable the use of buses (electric or double-length perhaps) with much lower acquisition and infrastructure costs and much greater flexibility.
Perhaps someone would explain the mysterious magic of metal track? It has escaped me. - Yours, etc.,
PETER COOGAN, Temple Manor, Celbridge, Co Kildare.
