Sir, - The FAI speaks loudly for the minority of soccer followers in this country in its opposition to the Wimbledon move. Soccer followers and fans in Ireland are first and foremost Premiership supporters, secondly they are Irish international supporters, and thirdly a small fraction are League of Ireland supporters.
No disrespect to the league, but in the modern era there is just no room for a small-town amateur or semi-pro set-up, which is exactly what the League of Ireland is, and will remain without an injection of tens of millions of pounds.
The question must be: do we want full-time professional football in Ireland, or are we content with the local game which can never have an international dimension. - Yours, etc.,
