Sir, - I found it amusing that Jim Higgins, Fine Gael spokesman on public enterprise, was concerned that Eircom had decided to abandon its communications plan for the Border, Midlands and Western Region (April 23rd).

Perhaps he does not yet realise that Eircom is now a private company and, like all private companies, its motive for operation is profit. It no longer has an obligation to provide services to all the citizens of the State.

The Government and Opposition no longer have a say in how Eircom is to conduct its business and if the company decides for whatever reason that it is not going to provide a service to the people of the BMW region, that is its decision.

Perhaps the advocates of privatisation will highlight these shortcomings when and if the next batch of the people's assets are to be put on the market. - Yours, etc.,
