A chara, - Bravo for Kevin Myers! At long last someone is speaking up about how the feminist ethos of our times so often works to the detriment of men. No one is denying that women have been grossly discriminated against in the past and continue to be in many aspects of life. Much still needs to be done, by both men and women, to rectify this.
However, two wrongs do not make a right. Gender equality is about equality for both sexes - not the unfettered promulgation of women's rights and well-being at the expense of men's.
Anyone who doubts that this is what is happening has only to look at many of the ads and programmes on television. We constantly see images of feckless, stupid, and weak men contrasted with images of assured, independent women. These images are the symptoms of the current ethos, not its causes. For too long men have been keeping quiet about this in the misguided belief that men deserve this and that is was a necessary part of creating a balance in the status of men and women. It is time to realise that going from one extreme to the other and demonising and discriminating against men does nothing to help create an equal society. - Is mise, Derek Lambe,
