Alexander Tango will attempt to bring off a Grade One New York double at the end of this month after securing the first leg with an impressive victory at Belmont Park on Saturday night
The Tommy Stack-trained filly won the $250,000 Garden City Breeders' Cup Handicap by three parts of a length from the local horse Bit of Whimsy after a dramatic dash from the back of the field in the straight.
"I thought we were done half down the back side because we were far back off a slow pace," said Stack's son and assistant, Fozzie, afterwards. "She just got squeezed for room on the first turn."
Local rider Shaun Bridgmohan was less concerned, however, and explained of the winner, who paid almost 7 to 1, that: "She's used to these kinds of races in Europe where they go slow and then pick up. Once she got daylight she picked it up."
Alexander Tango will now remain at Belmont for the Flower Bowl Invitational on September 29th.
There was less good news on Saturday night at Belmont for Aidan O'Brien's Yellowstone who finished only sixth of seven when favourite for the Man O'War Stakes.
Victory went to the French-trained Doctor Dino who beat Sunriver in a tight finish under Oliver Peslier.
Today's Ardilaun Hotel Oyster Stakes is the feature of the Galway September festival and although he drops back to a mile and a half after a Listed win at 14 furlongs last time, Red Moloney can continue his progress and confirm form with Hasanka.
The latter is 3lb better for three lengths from the Curragh last month but Red Moloney should have no problem with the lesser trip either and looks a horse rapidly on the upgrade.
Dermot Weld's two-year-olds are highly regarded generally and the Dundalk runner-up Angel Dreamer can maintain their winning form in the opener.
