All for a worthy cause

At a time when professionals are often slated for their obsession with money, it's nice to note another side to their nature. As was exemplified at last Monday's Smurfit Christy O'Connor Pro-Am at The K Club, where the Links Society were doing their admirable work for charity.

Before setting off early in the day with his amateur partners, England's Peter Mitchell told organiser Cecil Whelan: "I'll go out for a second 18 if you need me." Though his services weren't required, Mitchell insisted at Fota Island: "I meant it; I would have done it no trouble at all. It's a wonderful charity day."

Ian Woosnam clearly shared that view, given the trouble he went to in contributing a worthy item for the auction that night. It was the official menu from the champions' dinner at this year's US Masters, signed by the 2000 winner, Vijay Singh.

But there was a bonus. On its cover was a gathering of masters, a photograph including such legendary figures as Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen and Jimmy Demaret. And it was signed by Sam Snead and Byron Nelson, the only two of the group still alive - prompting an appreciative bidder to pay £2,000 for it. Which will help sick children get well.
