Ameerat got the better of a fantastic battle with Muwakleh to land the Sagitta 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket yesterday. The Michael Jarvis-trained daughter of Mark of Esteem came with a sizzling run under Philip Robinson to catch Frankie Dettori's mount in the final 100 yards and win by a neck.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained Toroca finished a further one and three-quarter lengths back in third but favourite Karasta was always struggling and only beat one of her 14 rivals home.
Ameerat was having her first outing of the season and gave her trainer his first English Classic in 33 years of training. It was Robinson second success in the race following Pebbles in 1984.
On Saturday, Kieren Fallon and Michael Stoute repeated last year's Sagitta 2,000 Guineas success with King's Best as Golan took the first Classic of the season. Aidan O'Brien's Minardi was a fast-finishing fourth.
