The United States, which lost their first international to Ireland in Dublin on Friday night, reversed the result with a 3-2 win in a five-bout contest in Drogheda last night, with Ireland's two wins coming in the final two bouts.
World bronze medallist Darren Campbell was the busier boxer against John Medina in the opening two rounds of the flyweight contest. However, he tired and the American took over to win by 22 points to 16.
At featherweight, Noel Hazlett lost to impressive American Michael Evans. The power of Evans was much too much for Hazlett and the referee stopped the contest in the final round.
In an evenly-matched contest Belfast's William Waite lost to Gerard Tucker at bantamweight. Waite received controversial standing eight counts in the third and fourth rounds and Tucker then applied pressure to win 16 points to eight. The captain of the Irish team, Dundalk lightweight Eugene McEneaney beat Sergio De La Torres, who rained in a huge number of body punches throughout the fight; however most of the shots were not scoring on the computer system. McEneaney received a perhaps generous 11 points to 10 victory.
In the final contest of the evening, the current national senior super heavyweight champion, John Kinsella beat Stanley McLean. In an explosive opening round, both boxers threw a number of exciting combinations. In an even more exciting second round McLean received two standing eight counts before the referee stepped the fight.
