MEN'S TENNIS: Second seed Mario Ancic was a surprise first-round casualty at the BMW Open in Munich yesterday. The Croatian went down in two tie-break sets to home favourite Philipp Kohlschreiber, the German winning 7-6, (7/3) 7-6, (7/5).
Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo was an early winner, beating Tobias Summerer 6-1, 6-2. Germany's Tommy Haas, seeded four, failed to get to grips with Ivo Karlovic, allowing the Croatian to seal a 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) triumph. Third seed Jarkko Nieminen defeated Andrei Pavel 7-6, (9/7), 7-6 (9/7).
