Former Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka squandered a glorious chance to give Real Madrid a place in the final of the World Club Championship last night. The 20-year-old, who left the Arsenal for Real for £23.5 million last year, scored two goals but missed a penalty nine minutes from time as the Spanish giants drew an entertaining clash with Corinthians. Anelka gave Real a 19th minute lead, but Edilson tied the scores nine minutes later and put the Brazilians ahead midway through the second half with a classy finish.
Anelka made it 2-2 19 minutes from time, springing the offside trap to receive a through ball from Raul before finishing coolly.
The French international striker then had a chance to seal his hat-trick when the dangerous Savio was fouled in the area and a penalty was awarded to Real.
But Anelka's weak effort was saved by Corinthians goalkeeper Dida - and the match finished all square.
If both sides win their final group matches Real will go out on goal difference because of this result.
