Annadale fight their corners with style

Men's Hockey The rain poured down literally and metaphorically on Corinthians over the weekend

Men's HockeyThe rain poured down literally and metaphorically on Corinthians over the weekend. Arriving at Annadale with real expectations of causing an upset against the premier side in Ulster, they departed with eight goals against ringing in their ears.

Few would have anticipated such an outcome, one that puts Annadale firmly in the role of joint favourites for the Irish Senior Cup along with Pembroke Wanderers, who also came through to the fourth round of the competition. Rather deliciously, Pembroke and Annadale were drawn to face each other in the final 16, Annadale coming out of the hat first.

Pembroke, who comfortably beat Banbridge 4-1, are now aware of how slick Annadale can be at set pieces, their short-corner specialist, Ian Hamilton, coming away from the match with six goals.

While Annadale were three goals up after just 12 minutes and from there on were firmly in control, Cork C of I snatched their first goal of the match against Instonians just 12 minutes from the end, when David Hobbs followed up at a short corner. That might have seemed enough for the visitors to advance but Mark Irwin stung back a few minutes later before Mark Gleghorn finished off the match in favour of the Belfast side with a winner in the dying minutes.

That victory also takes another fancied team out of the competition. But Cork Harlequins remained in the hunt with a one-sided 12-0 win over Portrane, Eddie Gash hitting five goals and David Eakins three.

Elsewhere, Monkstown will curse their form in letting Trinity come from behind twice to earn themselves a 3-2 win, while Michael Fry's goal wasn't enough for Dublin's YMCA as they went down 2-1 to NI Civil Service.

Three Rock Rovers, however, made good in Mossley, returning home with a 3-1 win and a reasonable draw, against Kilkeel, in the next round.

Rovers' luck was not shared by Railway Union. Having beaten Antrim 5-2, the Sandymount side drew Instonians away in the next round, while the students from Trinity also face a torrid fourth-round tie, although they are at home, against Cork Harlequins.

Lisnagarvey also quietly advanced, their 3-0 win over Aer Lingus earning them a pleasing match against Bangor next round.
