The Dave Clark saga looks set to take another twist in the coming weeks. The story so far . . . Australian-born Canadian coach Dave Clark is dismissed by the Canadian RFU. Outraged, the international players decide to support Clark and refuse to play for Canada. This leads to a stand off and the cancellation of Australia's visit to Canada and the latter's tour to Ireland and Scotland.
Now read on . . . the board of directors of Rugby Canada, who made the decision to dismiss Clark, found themselves overthrown less than a year into the job. Furthermore, the new board has decided to revisit Clark's dismissal. It now seems likely he will get his old job back. He seems sure: "I am confident that they will find in favour of me being reinstated."
New Rugby Canada president Pat Parfrey (an Irishman and former Canadian national team coach) made the review the first issue of business for the new board. At issue is whether Clark received proper notice before his dismissal. Clark added: "We will regain our credibility nationally and internationally very quickly because of the changes that have been made. The world is aware of it. They know that it was dysfunctional before."
The cash-strapped union had paid Clark a year's salary as part of the settlement but the Australian said he will use that as his salary should he be put back in charge. This column hopes to bring you the final instalment in the saga soon.
