Finn Harps came from behind to inflict a second successive defeat on main promotion rivals Athlone Town with a 2-1 home win to keep them bottom of the table, seven points in arrears and without a win after six games.
Andy Myler shot Athlone in front from a free-kick three minutes before half-time. But, led by player/manager Jonathan Speak, Harps hit back to win the game with two goals inside the final 20 minutes. Speak shot home the first following a sweeping move and then put strike-partner Kevin McHugh in to score the winner 10 minutes from time.
Cobh Ramblers survived a penalty against them and played half the match with 10 men before beating Dublin City 1-0 thanks to an own goal in a bizarre game at St Colman's Park.
Full back Thomas Hughes was sent off for handling a Thomas McGauley header on the line seconds before half-time. But John Donegan saved Aaron Lynch's penalty. McGauley then deflected a Willie Byrne free-kick into his own goal on 57 minutes.
Sligo Rovers beat Waterford United 3-1 with their floodlights switched back on at the Showgrounds.
