Alan Swinbank saddled his first Flat winner with only his fourth runner when veteran campaigner Batoutoftheblue showed his younger rivals a clean pair of heels in the Brian Clough's Birthday Stakes (Showcase Handicap) at Southwell yesterday.

Batoutoftheblue took up the running approaching the final furlong and was ridden out by Fergal Lynch to beat the hattrick seeking Kent by a comfortable three lengths.

William Jarvis made it six out of six on the all weather this winter when Rapt got off the mark in good style under Michael Tebbutt in the St Benedict's Day Median Auction Maiden Stakes.

Madame Jones is a remarkably tough mare and she bounced back from an injury scare to win her fifth race of the year under good apprentice Joanna Badger in the Johann Sebastian Bach Handicap division two.

And she will not be resting on her laurels as trainer David Evans explained: "She will have to run again on Saturday at Wolverhampton, she has won too far (three lengths)."
