Men's Hockey: The Leinster branch got what they wanted yesterday at Serpentine Avenue with a crowd of several hundred; Pembroke didn't. In a lively game visitors Glenanne, having gone 3-0 ahead, had to settle for a draw as Pembroke found their feet in the second half to storm back and share the spoils. Overall, the result will suit Glenanne more than Pembroke as the former still head the table by five points. Pembroke, and now also Corinthians, are chasing the leaders on 11 points each.

Glenanne raced into a 2-0 lead within eight minutes. Hesitant in defence, Pembroke were a stride off the pace and everything in the opening quarter looked as though it would pay dividends for the visitors. First Gary Shaw slid in after Stephen Butler was found with a 60-yard pass from defence.

Butler's slap across found Shaw hurtling in again unmarked at the far post for 1-0. Two minutes later John Goulding nicked the ball from Pembroke playing out of defence. The ensuing scramble was again won by Glenanne, this time Brendan Parsons poking in for the second goal.

Pembroke were ghastly. No aggression, little urgency and bad marking allowed Glenanne lord the first half. Shaw added his second and Glenanne's third on 24 minutes, a sweet shot from the edge of the circle finding the inside of the far post inches out of reach of goalkeeper Nigel Henderson's foot.

Justin Sherriff grabbed a goal back from Pembroke's second corner, a low drag flick bring the score to 3-1 at the break, but Pembroke at that point looked in real trouble. Then it turned around. The home side pressed and Glenanne found themselves with a lot less time on the ball. Pembroke matched the visitors' aggression and pace and the league leaders found themselves under considerably more pressure.

Craig Foulton earned Pembroke's third corner and Sherriff again obliged with a low, hard flick for 3-2. Gordon Elliott began to buzz, the defence gave Glenanne little and finally Alan Sothern landed the third goal, a cross for Alan Giles from the left finding the teenager's stick for a worthy equaliser.

Earlier in the day Trinity defeated YMCA by 3-2, having trailed by two goals. It is the students' first win of the season after four matches and raises them further away from bottom-placed Avoca, who lost 4-2 to Three Rock Rovers.
