Young striker Sidney Govou scored two superb goals in the opening 20 minutes as Olympique Lyon beat Bayern Munich 3-0 and kept alive their chances in Group C of advancing to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
Govou, starting only because Steve Marlet was suspended, put the French side ahead after 13 minutes and then doubled the lead with a long-range shot.
Midfielder Pierre Laigle scored the third goal in the 71st minute - again after good work from the speedy Govou - as Lyon recorded one of the best wins in their history.
Bayern needed only one point to be certain of qualifying after winning three and drawing one of their opening four matches - but found themselves outplayed.
If Lyon beat Spartak in Moscow next Wednesday and Arsenal lose or draw in Munich, Lyon will accompany Bayern into the last eight. But if Arsenal defeat Bayern and Lyon beat Spartak, they will go through with the London side.
