Bayern Munich took advantage of some slack defending by Real Madrid to win a thrilling Group C match 4-2 last night.
Bayern, losing European Cup finalists last season, leapfrog Real to lead the group with seven points. Real now lie second with six points.
Real's defeat - only their second in 18 Champions League matches at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium - was set in motion by a trio of first-half goals from the German visitors.
Mehmet Scholl and Stefan Effenberg scored two within three minutes midway through the first period. Fernando Morientes pulled one back for Real, but a Thorsten Fink strike after 39 minutes put the German league leaders 3-1 ahead at halftime.
Raul Gonzalez headed home Real's second shortly after the break, but Brazilian striker Paolo Sergio finished off the Spanish side with Bayern's fourth goal after 67 minutes.
Dynamo Kiev scored their first win of this phase when they downed the Norwegians of Rosenborg Trondheim 2-1.
Dynamo, who made the semifinals last season, got off to a stunning start with two goals in the opening 30 minutes and then held off the fast-finishing visitors.
Belarus international midfielder Alexander Khatskevich opened the scoring with a fine shot from the edge of the penalty area. Then, in the 29th minute, Ukraine international striker Serhii Rebrov stunned the Norwegians' defence with a 30metre screamer from the left that flew in just under the crossbar.
The two-goal burst delighted the 50,000 crowd on a frosty night, but Dynamo still had plenty of work left to do.
Rosenborg striker Mini Jakobsen found the net three minutes after the break following a corner from half-time substitute Oyvind Storflor, but Dynamo managed to hold out.
Two late goals by Danish substitute Jon Dahl Tomasson guided Feyenoord to a shock 2-1 victory over Lazio in Rome in a dramatic Group D clash.
Lazio were whistled off the pitch after their Argentinian midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron scored an acrobatic goal in the 37th minute only for Tomasson to snatch a 78th-minute equaliser and then hit an 84th-minute winner.
The match was marred by more racist abuse from the extreme right wing element in Lazio's supporters - who this time targetted Feyenoord's black defender Ulrich Van Gobbel.
Booed every time he touched the ball, the Dutchman suffered the same racist abuse that has also been handed out by Lazio fans to black players from Venezia and Parma in recent weeks.
On the field, Lazio were beaten in a match which they had under control and which saw both sides miss chances in the first few minutes.
The Italians then saw their appeals for a late penalty turned down after Ferry De Haan made contact with Diego Simeone.
