Warren Bennett rediscovered the knack of winning at Gleneagles when he beat Dutchman Rolf Muntz in a sudden death play-off to win the Stg£250,000 Scottish PGA Championship.
The 28-year-old from Watford swept the boards on last year's European Challenge Tour, five victories helping him comfortably to the number one spot on the Order of Merit with over £80,000 in prize-money. But this season on the main European Tour, his best showing had been a tie for eighth in the Compaq European Grand Prix at Slaley Hall in June - until yesterday. An excellent closing 69 in difficult windy conditions saw him move up alongside Muntz, who ended with an uninspired level-par 72, on six-under-par 282. Both players were one shot ahead of Sweden's Klas Eriksson and England's Roger Winchester.
And Bennett did not waste any time in bagging the £41,664 first prize and securing his playing privileges for next year, when he fired a sand-wedge approach to five feet on the first play-off hole before rolling in the winning birdie putt.
Bennett said: "It's the biggest win of my career, there's no doubt about that, but I had a feeling it was just around the corner because I had been getting better without getting the results.
"I felt comfortable today but I must admit when I was over the last putt I did tense up a little. I just said to myself, `you know what you have to do, just relax and knock it in'."
It was also a happy day for Aberdeen's Greig Hutcheon, who finished on level-par 288 after a closing 73, good enough to give him the honour of finishing top of the 73 Scots entered.
