Professional golfers insist that they like returning to courses that give them good vibes, in which case Tony Johnstone and Colin Montgomerie should have a spring in their steps heading into this week's Portuguese Open at Quinta do Lago.
Johnstone won this title on this course back in 1984, while Monty won it in 1989 with a record 72holes total of 264 for the venue. Johnstone, who celebrates his 45th birthday next month, is enjoying a new lease of life on tour this season and has already won the Qatar Masters.
But life has hardly been a bed of roses for Montgomerie in his limited outings so far this year, all of which makes his favouritism tag of 3 to 1 a little on the mean side. It might be more advisable to look elsewhere for value.
Padraig Harrington's new status in the sport is reflected in his odds of 6 to 1 as second favourite, and Paul McGinley - a 20 to 1 shot - is a player who likes playing in Portugal and could be decent value for money. Harrington might be worth a wager for a win bet, but the each-way bet has to be Peter Mitchell at 50 to 1 who seems to reserve his best form for this region of Portugal.
