While the recent wet spell has been causing havoc in Ireland and Britain, those looking forward to Saturday's fascinating clash between Authorized and George Washington have no cause for concern at present.

The Coral-Eclipse takes centre stage at Sandown and clerk of the course Andrew Cooper reports conditions to be currently no worse than soft.

"We've just had a good walk of the track and at the moment the ground is a mixture of good to soft and soft," he said.

"The round track on which the Coral-Eclipse is run I'd probably call good to soft and soft in places, and the sprint track would be soft and good to soft in places.

"It looks like we'll have an unsettled start to the week, but things may settle down a bit towards the middle and end of the week. There are no issues with raceability."

Although Sandown's two-day meeting will grab the majority of headlines this weekend, Haydock's three-day fixture also features some classy action with the Bet365 Old Newton Cup headlining Saturday's fare.

Clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright has been forced to call an 8am inspection today ahead of Thursday's meeting, but he is hopeful of staging at least some racing. He said: "We've had a very wet 24 hours, with 26 millimetres of rain between 8am on Sunday and 10am today. We've also had more since then with more to come, so have decided to call an inspection for 8am on Tuesday.

"That is obviously pre-declaration time and if the situation is hopeless, we'll take a decision then and hopefully it will help people in terms of their planning.

"The forecast on Thursday is better, so while prospects for Thursday are not great, they are better for Friday and Saturday. Hopefully it will relent a bit and we'll get some racing."

English tracks have not been the only ones to suffer from the renegade summer storms, with Tipperary forced to abandon tonight's fixture, while tomorrow's Perth card has also been called off.

Officials at the Scottish venue held an inspection at 4pm this afternoon, after which general manager Sam Morshead said: "We've had our inspection and unfortunately Wednesday's card has had to be abandoned due to waterlogging.

"We will have an inspection for Thursday at 2pm tomorrow. The forecast is for further showers tomorrow, and slow-moving, thundery weather."

The going at Chepstow is heavy ahead of tomorrow's racing but clerk of the course Tim Long is cautiously optimistic about beating the rain.
