The biting incident on Saturday which resulted in London Scottish flanker Simon Fenn requiring 25 stitches in his left ear is just the latest in a series of violent acts which have disfigured rugby union.
The more recent cases include:
1992 - All Black prop Richard Loe banned for nine months after eye gouging an opponent while playing for Waikato against Otago in the national championship final.
1993 - France's captain Jean-Francois Tordo requires 50 stitches to his face in two hours of plastic surgery after being raked by a boot in an international against South Africa. Bath centre Phil de Glanville needs 15 stitches in his face after a stamping incident during a match against the touring New Zealand All Blacks. England scrumhalf Kyran Bracken injured after All Black flanker Jamie Joseph stamps on his ankle during the international at Twickenham.
1994 - South African prop Johan le Roux banned for 19 months after biting the ear of All Black captain Sean Fitzpatrick during an international. England full back Jon Callard needs 25 stitches in his face after stamping incident in South Africa.
1996 - Ireland prop Peter Clohessy received 26 playing-weeks ban for stamping on Olivier Roumat's face in Paris during a Five Nations match.
1997 - French club Brive and Pontypridd of Wales fined after a violent European Cup match. Three Pontypridd players arrested by police after a post-match brawl in a Brive bar.
