Blackrock College yesterday confirmed in a statement that they would be citing a DLSP player under IRFU regulations arising from an incident during the AIB League game between the teams last Saturday.
Blackrock College prop Gary Halpin suffered a serious ear injury that required over 40 stitches and both he and his club are angered by the manner in which it is alleged to have happened.
Blackrock viewed a video of the incident - the video was given to them by DLSP as it was the only one taken at the match - and following that the Rugby Committee of the club convened to discuss the issue. Yesterday they officially released a statement.
It read: "Blackrock College RFC have decided to cite a DLSP RFC player under the IRFU regulations following an incident in the AIB League Division One match between the clubs on Saturday, February 10th at Stradbrook, during which the Blackrock prop forward Gary Halpin suffered an injury. No further comment at present."
The IRFU confirmed that they were aware of Blackrock's decision to cite and that a full investigation into the matter will be carried out. The matter has been referred to the Disciplinary Committee, under the chairmanship of Peter Boyle.
DLSP released a statement during the week on reviewing the video evidence, pointing out that they believed that none of their players had a case to answer, suggesting that it appeared an accident, and passed on their sincere sympathy to Halpin for the injury suffered.
