Croatia moved in to contention in Group Eight with a 3-2 home win over Macedonia courtesy of a goals by Davor Suker and a brace from Zvonimir Boban.
Sasa Ciric gave the Macedonians a shock second-minute lead but Suker levelled in the 16th and Boban made it 2-1 to the hosts on the stroke of half-time.
Djevdet Sainovski equalised for the battling Macedonians 10 minutes after the break but Boban's second goal on 70 minutes ended their stubborn resistance.
Romania stayed top of Group Seven despite a tame 1-1 draw in Hungary.
Former Coventry striker Viorel Moldovan put the Romanians ahead shortly after the break but Janos Hrutka equalised with eight minutes left.
Portugal, who lost at home to the Romanians on Saturday, remain in the hunt after a 3-0 win in Slovakia where Joao Pinto was twice on target. Also in Group Seven, Liechtenstein beat Azerbaijan 2-1 in Vaduz.
Meanwhile in Group Nine, Valdas Ivanauskas scored a hattrick as Lithuania beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-2 in Vilnius.
