Bolton Wanderers are one game away from a return to the Premiership after beating Ipswich Town on away goals after a gripping play-off semi-final finished 4-4 on aggregate.

Bolton, relegated twice in the last three years, have a chance to return at the first attempt to the top flight and now face the winners of the Watford v Birmingham match which will be decided tonight.

It was more heartbreak for George Burley and Ipswich who experienced disappointment in the play-offs for the third season in a row despite winning 4-3 on the night.

It all looked to be going well for Ipswich when Matt Holland put them in front after 14 minutes. Bob Taylor levelled it on the night just six minutes after the restart.

Kieron Dyer restored Ipswich's lead a minute later, and after Per Frandsen levelled it at 2-2 six minutes from time, there was a further twist when Dyer grabbed his second right on the whistle.

Taylor's second goal six minutes into extra time left Ipswich needing to score twice to earn a place at Wembley in the First Division final.

Holland managed to get one, but Bolton held on to once again deny the side finishing third at the end of the league season a chance in the final.

Manchester City and Gillingham will contest the Second Division play-off final after both sides achieved 2-1 aggregate wins.

A Shaun Goater goal was enough to earn City a 1-0 win on the night against neighbours Wigan in front of a 31,000-plus crowd at Maine Road.

Andy Hessenthaler's second minute strike was the only goal of the night at Priestfield as Preston.
