Bill Cullen, the chief executive of Renault, steered a steady course at the K Club yesterday to help his Renault team win the Smurfit pro-am tournament for the second year running. The home club member carded birdies at the 13th and 16th holes to greatly boost the team's chances of success. Ian Woosnam led in the winning side which also included Minister of State Seamus Brennan, a member of Grange, and Renault corporate sales director Joe O'Grady, who also plays out of the K Club. They carded a 20under-par total of 124.
Cullen's birdie at the 16th was carved out with a drive and seven iron to 10 feet and he rolled home the putt. "Possibly the only birdie there today," enthused O'Grady, who covered the front nine in just one over par.
