Goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has brought his long-running problems at Manchester United to an end and signed for Chelsea on a free transfer.

The former Aston Villa keeper was released by United yesterday after being left out of the first team squad for most of the season.

Chelsea immediately added the 29year-old Australian international to their ranks on a three-and-a-half-year contract. Chelsea managing director Colin Hutchinson said: "He wants to play for Chelsea. He is hungry to win things and put the past behind him. He has a few points to prove.

"He will add to our squad and quality keepers. He knows the competition for the number one jersey (currently held by Carlo Cudicini with Ed de Goey fighting to reclaim his place) will be tough."

Bosnich's agent Steve Kutner said: "At this time Mark does not wish to dwell on the past but only look towards a brighter future with Chelsea.

"Over the next few weeks Mark will be concentrating on getting back to full match fitness after his recent hernia operation so that when he is called upon by Chelsea he will be ready."

Bosnich insists he is leaving United on his own terms because the club have agreed to let him go without a fee. His contract at Old Trafford was due to last until June 2003 but has ended after just 18 months and 35 appearances.

The National League Premier Division game between Shelbourne and Derry City which was postponed last weekend due to a frozen pitch at Tolka Park has been refixed for next Tuesday night at 7.45 p.m..
