Rowing: Offaly's Ciarán Brady (18), made a big play for a place in Ireland's team for the Coupe de la Jeunesse, a European junior championship, by finishing second in the men's senior single scull at Monkstown Regatta in Cork on Saturday, reports Liam Gorman.

Skibbereen's Kenny McCarthy and John Wholley, who finished first and third, look set for the Ireland team for the Home Internationals, also in Cork, later this month.

Their clubmate Virginia Hourihane won the women's senior single to stake her claim for international selection.

The winning pairs at the regatta were lightweights John Forde of Neptune and Kevin O'Connor (St Michael's) and the all-Neptune pair of Elaine Fitzgerald and Claire Magee.
