SCHOOLS RUGBY:CBS NAAS captain Robin Brickell was the hero of the hour after striking for a try as late as the 65th minute for a 16-13 win over Gorey Community School in the Leinster Schools (Section A) McMullen Senior Cup first round at Tullow RFC yesterday.
Despite the best efforts of Gorey number eight Eddie Earle and able kicking from Stephen Duke, Naas just about deserved their passage. Left-wing Eoin Kiely skated in for their other try.
Sandford Park spread five tries among prop Josh Cowan, scrumhalf James Orr, flanker Lee Deighton, outhalf Terence Robson and centre Elliot Finn-Phillips in their 29-12 win over Good Counsel, New Ross, at Oak Park.
Maynooth Post Primary pipped Wilson’s Hospital 23-19 on the back of tries from centre Ciarán Kearney, lock Mark Donnellan and right-wing Alex Birchall, who also kicked eight points, at Edenderry.
An outstanding two-try contribution from prop Ian McKeon was not enough to save Marian College from going under 34-20 to the more rounded threat of Mount Temple and their try scorers Shane Homan, Sam Gibney, Vincent Gavin, John Oscar Gibbons and Conor McGinley at Guinness RFC.
Skerries Community College had Kevin McGrath to thank for their 11-8 defeat of St Columba’s College at the Alsaa grounds. The outhalf kicked two penalties and created the decisive try for wing Seán O’Driscoll in the 40th minute.
Dundalk Grammar outhalf Ultan Murphy kicked two penalties, the winner coming in injury-time, to see off St Paul’s College, Raheny, who could only manage a Sam Skelly penalty in return, at Ashbourne RFC.
