Ron Atkinson hopes to begin the re-structuring of Sheffield Wednesday by signing the former England B defender David Burrows from the manager's previous club, Coventry City.

Talks that could pave the way for a straight swop involving Wednesday's Welsh international midfielder, Mark Pembridge, opened yesterday with the value of the player put at £800,000.

Wednesday and Coventry will today try to sign the same player, the unsettled Celtic striker, Tommy Johnson.

Johnson, a former England Under-21 international who had spells at Aston Villa and Derby County, is now acknowledged to be surplus to requirements at Parkhead, although both Atkinson and his counterpart at Coventry, Gordon Strachan, may find an asking price of £2.4 million prohibitive.

Everton yesterday completed the signing of the promising Norwegian goalkeeper, Thomas Myrhe, from Viking Stavanger for £800,000.

With Neville Southall given only a 50-50 chance of recovering from a back injury, Myrhe could well make his debut in tomorrow's crucial Premiership fixture against Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park.
