SINGAPORE OPEN:US Open champion Angel Cabrera fired a sparkling eight-under-par 63 for a halfway total of eight-under-par 134 to take a two-stroke lead in the weather-interrupted second round at the Singapore Open.
American Jin Park was alone in second place on six-under-par 136 after shooting a one-under 70 at Sentosa Golf Club's Serapong course, while defending champion Adam Scott was a further stroke behind in the Asian Tour event after picking up four birdies on the back nine in his round of 67.
Lee Westwood (67) and Australian Gavin Flint (72) were tied for fourth on four-under 138, while world number two Phil Mickelson (72), KJ Choi (72) and Vijay Singh (70) were handily placed on 140. Darren Clarke added a second 71 for 142.
But world number four Ernie Els, is in danger of missing the cut after shooting a five-over 76 to drop to six-over-par 148 for the tournament.
With play suspended for 70 minutes in the afternoon due to lightning, 37 players will have to return this morning to complete their second rounds.
The cut is projected to be five over par.
After opening the tournament with a level-par 71, Cabrera caught fire in his second round, shooting an impressive nine birdies. The big-hitting Argentinian had to keep his driver in his bag for much of his opening round after the clubhead came loose from the shaft, but, after having it repaired overnight, he found his form in calm conditions at Sentosa.
"I really hit it well off the tee and made everything that I needed to make and that was the difference," said Cabrera, whose birdie run included a 25-foot putt at the third.
WORLD CUP:The US team in the World Cup in China later this month is now Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum - ranked 36th and 74th in the world - rather than Arron Oberholser and Sean O'Hair.
With Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and Zach Johnson all turning down the trip, Oberholser earned a place in the event, but then pulled out because of injury.
Weekley was the next to accept the invitation, had the right to choose his partner and instead of O'Hair went for his close friend Slocum. The pair have played golf together since their schooldays in Florida, both being members of the Milton High School team.
n LPGA: England's Laura Davies carded a seven-under-par 65 to claim a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Mizuno Classic in Shima, Japan.
The 44-year-old - playing the third and final leg of the LPGA's tour of Asia - continued her good form in the Far East which has seen her finish 18th and second in the last fortnight.
The four-time major winner began with birdies on three of her first four holes, and five on the front nine, while she picked up shots at the par-four 12th and par-five 13th coming home.
One shot behind are Chie Arimura and Reilley Rankin, with defending champion Karrie Webb carding a one-over 73.
