Cahill set for Laois hurling position

Dinny Cahill is set to become the new Laois hurling manager

Dinny Cahill is set to become the new Laois hurling manager. The Tipperary native is one of four candidates interviewed for the role vacated by Paudie Butler at the end of a championship campaign in which Laois narrowly avoided relegation to the Christy Ring Cup.

Cahill stepped down in acrimonious circumstances as Antrim manager mid-championship this summer after a poor turnout to training in Casement Park. He had been making a 400-mile round trip several times a week and felt the effort from players was not being reciprocated.

The Laois job would bring him a higher profile with the possibility of games against Kilkenny or Wexford before the qualifier system begins. The distance travelling from his home in Tipperary would also be greatly reduced.

Other candidates still in with a chance are Séamus Plunkett, Ricky Cashin and minor manager Vincent Mullins. An ideal outcome for Cahill would be for Plunkett and Cashin to become his selectors and for Mullins to remain with the minors.

No final decision is expected until at least next week but if successful the move would snap up a quality manager ahead of Dublin, who are also believed to be on the verge of getting a new man in place.

The Armagh County Board will meet Joe Kernan next week, on Tuesday or Wednesday, when it is expected the Crossmaglen man will seek a fifth year in charge of the senior panel.

Kernan is expected to return along with his number two Paul Grimley and trainer John McCloskey.

With an announcement on the Mayo job coming on Tuesday - Mickey Moran is the current bookies' favourites - this will be the final significant football managerial appointment for next season.

Roscommon are still searching for a manager to replace Val Daly.

Meanwhile, after more than two months' trawling Leinster there is still no indication of who will replace Pat Roe as Wexford senior football manager.

The special committee set up by the county board have so far been unable to come up with a successor despite having met a number of potential candidates.

Now it's believed the committee are seeking potential candidates in the south, with former Cork manager Larry Tompkins high on the list, along with former Cork dual star Denis Walsh, who had a spell in charge of Waterford.
