Tim Hyde's Camas Park Stud in Cashel, Co Tipperary had the distinction of selling the sale topper, a Devil's Bag colt for $1 million at the Saratoga Select Yearling Sale on Tuesday. It was the first time that a yearling had fetched six figures at Saratoga since 1990. Robert and Beverly Lewis were the buyers of the half brother to Deeds Not Words.
Also in the US, a federal grand jury is investigating the death of the Calumet sire, Alydar, who was humanely destroyed in 1990 after fracturing his off hind leg.
The stallion was the subject of a $36.5 million insurance payout. Calumet, under former president J Lundy, filed for bankruptcy a year later with debts of over $118 million.
It is understood that former Calumet employees and at least one vet appeared before the Grand Jury in Houston, Texas, last month.
The Calumet name and most of its property were purchased in 1992 by Henryk de Kwiatkowski.
