Peter Canavan returns to training with Tyrone next week after reaching a sufficient level of fitness with his club Errigal Ciarán. The 2003 All-Ireland-winning captain took the decision to leave the panel before the start of the national league, as he was not satisfied with his progress.
Considering the year Mickey Harte has had with player departure and injury, the 34-year old's return is timely. "He has a hamstring problem at present but will be back training next week," said Harte. "Despite what some people were saying, he left the panel to work on his match fitness. Peter felt he needed to improve by playing with the club in their pre-season games."
This gives Canavan a full month to try and re-establish a place in the starting line-up as Tyrone launch their Ulster Championship campaign against Down on May 22nd in Healy Park, Omagh. It's their first home championship tie for seven years.
Canavan (right) was used last year as an impact replacement after struggling to recover from a serious ankle ligament injury, sustained in the 2003 All-Ireland semi-final against Kerry. This may be Harte's tactic again this summer in what may be the All Star forward's final campaign. "Of course, his return is a bonus. He brings a level of quality and experience to the panel and it helps too considering the level of injuries we've had."
Canavan's return has been slightly offset by corner back Brian Robinson's departure from the panel, mainly due to a lack of chances to play.
"It was entirely his own choice," continued Harte. "He may not have been getting enough game-time and has been injury prone over the last few months, so he has not been at his best."
Regarding, the possibility of Kevin Hughes or Brian McGuigan returning from exodus in Australia in time for the championship, Harte was hopeful of the latter becoming available.
"I have been talking to Brian McGuigan a fair bit so it is more likely that he will return but there has been no firm answer."
