Cardiff final venue for 2006 European Cup

The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff will host next season's Heineken European Cup final for the second time.

The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff will host next season's Heineken European Cup final for the second time.

It will be the fourth time in 11 years the Welsh capital has hosted the European Cup final.

Welsh Rugby Union chief executive David Moffett said: "It will be great to have the Heineken Cup final back in Cardiff and it will round off a fantastic season of international rugby at the Millennium Stadium."

Meanwhile, the Scottish Rugby Union yesterday defended ticket sales for this season's European Cup final amid fears of a poor turn-out.

Stade Francais and Toulouse will fight it out for the trophy at the 67,500-capacity Murrayfield Stadium on Sunday.

It has been confirmed that 42,000 tickets have been sold while the European Rugby Cup and SRU chiefs are expecting an attendance in excess of the 50,000-mark.

Thousands of tickets will remain unsold but - compared to the 2003 cup final, when Toulouse beat French rivals Perpignan at Lansdowne Road and only 28,600 turned up - it is still a considerable success.
