Carlow event goes ahead

There have been reprieves for two stage races

There have been reprieves for two stage races. Just days after John O'Brien said that the Dan Morrissey Club's promotion at Carlow was off, he announced it was back on again this weekend, in a revised form, while Pat McQuaid said the Junior Tour will go ahead on schedule in August.

Stage one of the Carlow event is a 3.2-miles time-trial tomorrow morning at 10.0. Then there will be five laps of a 12-miles Carlow circuit at 2.30. O'Brien's original plans for Sunday had to be altered and instead of a circuit of 80 miles around the county there will be a loop of 68 miles, starting at 10.0, and then one lap of the same 12-miles circuit being used tomorrow.

With no major sponsor, the Junior Tour has been in doubt but McQuaid said on Sunday that he has sufficient backing to continue the event over six days, from August 17th to 22nd. "I have no set plans yet but the stages will probably be over circuits in the Leinster region." He added that he has a few visiting teams lined up, just waiting for the final arrangements.

In addition to Carlow tomorrow, Sligo's Eire Og club have their Markievicz Cup race over 45 miles at Collooney (5.0) and the Mooney Memorial Cup there over 60 miles on Sunday (2.0).
