Carlow 0-16 Wexford 0-13 CARLOW HURLERS caused a huge shock by deservedly beating neighbours Wexford by three points at Dr Cullen Park.
This was no fluke Carlow win. They gained in confidence as the game progressed and enjoyed a greater share of possession than a disappointing Wexford side.
The visitors' were dependant on the outstanding Diarmuid Lyng, who scored 0-9 of his side's total, five from play, for scores.
The Carlow defence was heroic all through with full back Shane Kavanagh outstanding and also making his impact on the scoreboard with three superb long-range points from frees.
Level eight times and deadlocked 0-8 apiece at half time, the expected takeover by hot favourites Wexford never happened.
With Carlow 0-10 to 0-9 ahead in the 41st minute Wexford midfielder Harry Kehoe saw his goalbound effort splendidly saved by home goalie Kevin Kehoe at the expense of a '65 which Lyng converted into a white flag.
It proved a turning point and Carlow finished with a flourish with three well-struck points from frees by substitute Denis Murphy.
