Tyrone SFC Final/Carrickmore 1-6 Omagh 1-5: Carrickmore held on to their Tyrone football title in a tense, scrappy decider at Healy Park yesterday. Conor Gormley scored the all-important goal in the first half and though Mickey O'Neill hit back with a St Enda's goal early in the second half, they were unable to break down a stubborn Carrickmore defence.
The outcome was in the balance until the end but, as so often in the past, Carrrickmore survived with a determined backs-to-the-wall effort.
Omagh looked nervous for much of the first half, failing to find colleagues with numerous passes, but Carrickmore's well-organised defence can take credit for the early shut-out.
Kevin McNally's early point was cancelled out by a superbly-struck free from Omagh captain Justin McMahon. It was the champions who could have had a goal when Gabriel McCallan and Peter Loughran combined but Declan McGirr pulled off a fine save from Ronan McNally.
Loughran edged Carrickmore back in front but the sides were level by the end of the opening quarter after Gerard McPeake drilled an angled effort between the posts. The title-holders struck for a goal in the 16th minute, Conor McAleer collecting McCallan's long ball and the final pass was perfectly placed for Gormley to fire home.
Omagh struggled to get any fluency going, and often saw promising attacks broken up by Ronan McGarrity and Paul Hughes. McCallan scythed through for a point and Kevin McNally converted a free, with Cathal McCarron hitting two at the other end for Omagh.
Carrickmore led by 1-4 to 0-4 at half-time but were rocked early in the second half when O'Neill grabbed an Omagh goal. Omagh's lack of penetration was to cost them dearly.
Justin McMahon did land a free and the sides were level with three minutes to play but substitute Finbar Magill popped up with a sweet winner.
