An abundance of wides failed to detract from Dublin's superiority in yesterday's Oireachtas Cup hurling tie at O'Toole Park. Dublin hurled well for large parts of the game, with corner forward Emmet Carroll, in particular, excelling. The game got off to a rather curious start with both teams guilty of some glaring misses.
But eventually the hosts settled down, and in the second half struck for their first goal when Carroll pounced to score from inside the parallelogram.
But Wicklow managed to keep themselves in contention, mainly to the free-taking exploits of their half forward Casey O'Brien. A goal from John Moran put further pressure on Dublin.
But when O'Brien failed to convert a penalty towards the end Wicklow all but ended their involvement in the competition with Dublin in the end coasting home by six points.
