LEINSTER COLLEGES' SENIOR HURLING A LEAGUE - Castlecomer CS 3-9 Kilkenny CBS 0-10:A GOOD start proved to be half the battle as Castlecomer Community School booked their place in the Leinster Colleges' senior hurling Roinn A league final yesterday. The north Kilkenny school were quick off the mark against local rivals Kilkenny CBS yesterday, racing into a quick lead in Palmerstown.

Sent on their way by a pair of Stephen Daly frees, they were six points ahead after just five minutes, Luke Maher rounding goalkeeper Brian Cantwell to fire home his side’s first goal (1-3 to 0-0).

The CBS were stunned, but regained enough of their composure to get back into contention. Frees from Danny Lenihan (0-2) and Eoin McGrath, plus a point from play by Joe Keoghane, saw them get to within three of the leaders by the 16th minute, but a second goal, this time rattled home by Daly in the 27th minute, helped the Comer side go in with a five point lead at half-time (2-4 to 0-5).

The lead grew even bigger in the second half when Daly plundered his second goal, then saw team-mates Maher and Eoin Bergin follow up with minor scores to stretch Castlecomer’s advantage to nine points (3-6 to 0-6) by the 40th minute.

The CBS pushed hard to get back into the game, but couldn’t bridge the gap. They went close to grabbing goals of their own when both Mason Clifford and Eoin McGrath went for the net with close range frees late on, but both were denied by great saves from Castlecomer goalkeeper David Breen. Castlecomer’s reward is a place in next week’s final against St Kieran’s College.
