Monaghan appeared to relax their grip at various times in the second half but they still had the ability to score whenever it was needed and by the 46th minute they had extended their lead to nine points.

Two points from Seán Johnston came after an 11-minute break without a score from Cavan. Things got worse for the losers when they were reduced to 14 players in the 60th minute following a straight red to right corner forward Eddie Reilly.
