The Leopardstown Champion Stakes will be sponsored for the next five years by the mobile phone company Esat Digifone.The race, to be run on Saturday, September 13th, will now be known as the Digifone Champion Stakes and will have a value of £150,000.The 10-furlong, all-aged Group 1 race was last sponsored by Guinness in 1995.Esat Digifone chief executive Barry Maloney said: "Horseracing is a dynamic and extremely competitive sport. With this in mind, the sponsorship of the Irish Champion Stakes is an excellent event for Digifone to become involved in."The Irish 2,000 Guineas and Derby-winner Desert King is an intended runner in this race where he could clash with the Epsom Derbywinner Benny The Dip and Dance Design who ran second to Timarida in last year's Champion Stakes. Grand Prix supremo Eddie Jordan is expected to make the trophy presentation to the winning owner, trainer and jockey on the big day.
