Pat Clarke is the only new man nominated to the FIC board of 10 at the annual general meeting in Malahide tomorrow week. Clarke, of the Lakeland Club in Enniskillen, will take over as chairman of the sporting committee from Frankie Campbell, who is not seeking re-election after four years in office.
Another change will see Paddy Griffin moving from his position in charge of leisure cycling to publicity officer following the retirement of Tommy Campbell.
Griffin, of the Friends of Childline Club, was proposed by Clann Brugha and he is also unopposed. That leaves a vacancy on the leisure scene, and, with no nomination, the new board will draft somebody in.
Jack Watson and Peter Thornton are proposed to continue as secretary and treasurer and have no opposition. Thornton reports a surplus of over £60,000 in the kitty. Sean O'Callaghan has no challenger either as chairman of the under-age committee, and although he will not be at the meeting as he has gone as manager of the Kerry team to the Tour of Cameroon, his re-election also just needs ratification.
The other board members who stay in for another year are the president, Pat McQuaid, Dermot Dignam, Paddy Doran and Peter Purfield. Friday, November 6th, was the original date for early applications at a reduced rate of £8 for this weekend's Stephen Roche-Dr Giovanni Grazzi seminar, but that has been extended to today and 68 were in up to yesterday. The charge for tomorrow and Sunday at the Spa Hotel, Lucan, is £15.
Registration tomorrow is at 11.30, and at 12.15 Roche will talk about the lifestyle of a champion. He will be followed by Moira O'Brien on overtraining and Paddy Doran on periodisation of training. The Italian doctor, who was with the Carrera team when Roche was there and now works with the Asics squad, takes over on Sunday morning, starting with a lecture on testing aerobic and anaerobic power in road cycling. Then there will a workshop which will help riders and coaches to prepare programmes, and further talks follow on nutritional needs and drugs in sport.
