The Bye St Mary's College received in the first round of the Old Belvedere Floodlit Cup worked against them last night as they were whitewashed in this away game at Anglesea Road.
It was clear from the off that Clontarf were well prepared for this second-round encounter. They shielded the ball well, whether in the driving rain or a violently-swirling wind and profited from keeping the ball among their forwards.
However, both Clontarf tries came from behind the pack, with Ryan O'Neill putting them on their way in the sixth minute when he went over to the left of the posts.
The normally-reliable Richie Murphy missed the conversion and was to have a poor night, as was his opposite number, Richard Ormond, who missed a drop goal and two penalties in the first half.
Clontarf began the second half with a try. Hooker Bernard Jackman's burst gave impetus to a lateral movement which sent Ollie Winchester rifling over on the left. Murphy missed the conversion, but Clontarf's tight five had already provided a base for victory.
