"By half-time we were 27-0 up and someone asked if we should carry on playing, but I said anything can happen in football," said Jill Shinton, coach of Willenhall Town women's team, this week's winner of the award for the most inappropriate use of a football cliche. So, given that anything can happen in football, did Burton Brewers rally in the second half and snatch a point at the death. Alas no, they lost their West Midlands League Division One tie to Willenhall 57-0.
Burton settled down after a shaky start when they conceded seven goals in the first five minutes. There were mitigating factors too, not least that they started with only eight players.
"Another two of our team arrived at halftime. They'd had personal problems, then more problems finding the pitch," said Burton's peeved player-manager Gill Cross. Her final comment earned her a share of Jill's cliche award: "The girls were very disappointed."
